What Drives the Cost of a Standby Generator?
We do not publish prices, and this page explains why that is the honest position rather than an evasion. What it does give you is every variable that moves the number, so you can judge a quote when you get one.
Why There Is No Price List
An installed standby generator is a project, not a product off a shelf. The same model fitted at two houses on the same street can cost meaningfully different amounts, and the difference is not margin — it is the work.
One house has a modern 200-amp panel three feet from where the unit will sit, a gas meter with headroom, and level ground. The one next door has a full panel needing an upgrade, a gas line that has to be run forty feet around the property, and a site that needs work before a pad can go down. Same generator, genuinely different job.
Publishing a headline figure that changes the moment somebody visits does nobody any good. What Gen-Man does instead is come out, look, and put the whole thing in writing before you commit to anything — at no charge.
What Actually Moves the Number
Roughly in order of how much difference each one tends to make.
The generator itself
Capacity is the largest single line. Air-cooled residential units and liquid-cooled units are different classes of machine, and the step between them is significant. This is why sizing and cost are the same conversation — and why being talked into more capacity than you need is expensive.
The transfer switch
Every installation includes one, matched to the generator and to your electrical service. A whole-home service-entrance-rated switch is a different item from a smaller essential-circuits switch, and the amperage of your service decides which is appropriate.
The condition of your electrical panel
This is the one that most often surprises people. A panel with room and in good order is straightforward. One that is full, aged, or undersized for the intended load may need upgrading before anything else can proceed. It is checked during the evaluation so you hear about it before you spend money, not after.
The fuel connection
How far the gas line has to be run, whether the existing meter and service can carry the extra load, and whether a propane tank needs installing. A short run to an adequate meter is a small part of the job; a long run plus a meter upgrade is not.
Site conditions and the pad
Where the unit can legally and practically go, what the ground is like, how far it is from the panel and the fuel supply, and what access the crew has. Gen-Man handles the pad as part of the installation.
Permits and inspection
Alabama requires a permit for the electrical work and, in most cases, the gas piping, with a county inspection afterwards. Gen-Man pulls all required permits as part of every installation. Any contractor offering to skip this to save you money is offering you a liability, not a discount.
What the Written Estimate Covers
After the free site evaluation you get a written estimate covering:
- The specific generator model recommended, and why
- The transfer switch matched to it and to your service
- The installation scope — pad, wiring, fuel line, connections
- Permit handling and inspection
- The total installed cost
Major cost items are not left out and added later. There is no obligation to proceed after receiving it.
If you are comparing quotes, compare the scope rather than the headline. Whether the permit, the pad, the transfer switch and the fuel line are all included is usually where two numbers really differ.
Financing, Honestly Described
Financing options are available for qualified customers. Gen-Man is a generator installation company, not a lender: financing runs through third-party programs, and the approval, the rate and the terms are decided by the lender on your application.
Gen-Man does not guarantee financing, approval, a rate or a monthly payment, and the financing page says so in those words. Anyone promising you those things before you have applied is not being straight with you.
The right moment to ask is once you have the written estimate in hand, because you cannot judge whether financing makes sense until you know the total.
